Animal and Carousel Bronzes
A sense of fulfillment is brought about when life and work provide a true sense of purpose, including to serve as a catalyst for another's inspiration. . .just as I was inspired by my grandfather, E. Joy Morris, a turn-of-the-century, wooden, park-size carousel maker and inventor of the figure 8 roller coaster.
At the turn of the 19th into the 20th century, Philadelphia was the premier location for the production of carousels. Inspired by my grandfather, E. Joy Morris, a late 19th century carousel maker out of Philadelphia, I created a 5-foot diameter carousel in bronze. Granddad was an important founder of the American carousel industry, known as the Philadelphia style.
The process for making my carousel began by studying each animal in nature, for its' unique beauty, focusing on capturing the essence of that animal individually, and then in a family grouping of three, which becomes one section of the whole. Twelve sections (37 animals) make the circle complete. On a technical level, the entire carousel ensemble is a disciplined study of time and movement, scale and proportion, shape and space in animals at rest and in motion. The sculpture is placed on base so it can spin, slowly.
The last of my granddad's original, wooden rollercoasters is still operating in Altoona, Pennsylvania, known as "Leap the Dips". His last operating carousel is known as PTC No.6 in Kit Carson County, Colorado.
My carousel animals are available individually, in specific groupings, or as a whole.
